Homemade Tzatziki

Recipes

Love Mediterranean food? This refreshing homemade tzatziki is super simple to prepare and incredibly flavorful. Tzatziki is a Greek yogurt-based sauce with cucumbers, garlic, lemon juice, salt and fresh herbs such as dill and mint. It’s usually served as a sauce over grilled meat, fish, falafel, or dolmas (stuffed grape leaves) or a dip with veggies and warm pita bread. It’s also delicious with a Greek salad or as a sandwich spread. Try drizzling over roasted or grilled veggies too. There are so many ways to enjoy this creamy goodness!

Recipe: Homemade Tzatziki

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups 2% plain Greek yogurt
  • ¼ cup sour cream
  • 1 seedless English cucumber
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 tablespoon white wine or champagne vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh mint, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Freshly cracked pepper
  • Olive oil for drizzling (optional)

Directions:

  1. Wash cucumber and pat dry. Finely dice cucumber and set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the lemon juice, lemon zest, white wine vinegar, salt, pepper, and garlic. Set aside.
  3. In a mixing bowl, stir together the plain Greek yogurt and sour cream.
  4. Add the finely diced cucumber and stir to combine.
  5. Add the lemon juice mixture, chopped dill, and chopped mint. Stir well to mix together.
  6. Cover and place in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to marry.
  7. Before serving, drizzle with olive oil and garnish with dill. Serve with fresh veggies and warm pita bread.

Notes:

  • Fage Total 2% plain Greek yogurt is a delicious choice for this homemade tzatziki.
  • For the sour cream, I used Good Culture whole milk sour cream. It’s a sour cream with probiotics.
